How to use ChatGPT for the first time (no tech skills needed)

The quick answer

Go to chatgpt.com or download the free ChatGPT app made by OpenAI. Sign up with your email, Google, Apple or Microsoft account (no card needed). Type a question the way you'd ask a friend, then reply to the answer with things like "shorter" or "simpler, please."

Step by step: your first five minutes

  1. Open it. Visit chatgpt.com in your web browser, or get the free ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play. Check that the maker is OpenAI, since there are look-alike apps.
  2. Sign up for free. Use your email or your Google, Apple or Microsoft account. You don't need a credit card, and you can close any upgrade offers.
  3. Ask your first question. In the box that says something like "Ask anything," type a normal question, for example: "What can I make for dinner with chicken, rice and frozen broccoli?"
  4. Talk back to it. This is the part most beginners miss. If the answer is too long, say "shorter." Too complicated? Say "simpler, please." Want options? Say "give me three other ideas."
  5. Try your voice. In the app, tap the microphone or voice button and just speak. It's easier than typing on a small screen. Voice has limits on the free plan.

What the free plan includes

The free plan is plenty for everyday use: chatting, asking questions, writing help, and uploading a photo or document (with daily limits). Paid plans add more usage, but you don't need one to get started. In some countries you may see ads on the free plan.

Five great first things to ask

Not just ChatGPT

Other free AI assistants work almost the same way: Google Gemini (gemini.google.com), Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com) and Claude (claude.ai). Everything in this guide works there too. See our plain-English comparison to pick one.

Copy-and-paste prompt

I'm brand new to ChatGPT. Please introduce yourself in 3 short sentences, then suggest 5 simple, practical ways you could help me in everyday life. A little about me: [for example, "retired and love gardening" or "a busy parent"]. Keep everything in plain English.

Treat it like a smart friend, not an expert. ChatGPT can sound sure of itself and still be wrong, especially about facts, dates and numbers. For health, money or legal questions, use it to understand the basics, then check with a professional. Never type passwords, card numbers or ID numbers.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes. ChatGPT has a free plan that covers everyday chatting and questions, with limits on extras like uploads, images and voice. Paid plans add more usage.

Do I need to download an app?

No. You can use it in any web browser at chatgpt.com. The free app is handy on a phone, especially for voice.

Can I talk to ChatGPT instead of typing?

Yes. In the app, tap the voice or microphone button and speak. Voice use on the free plan is limited.
