Yes, the big free AI assistants are safe for everyday use if you treat them like a public place: don't share passwords, ID or bank numbers, use the official apps, and double-check important answers. Most tools also let you delete chats or use a private mode.
The 7 rules
- Never share secrets. No passwords, PINs, one-time codes, bank or card numbers, or ID numbers like a Social Security, national insurance or passport number. The AI never needs them.
- Cover personal details in photos. Before uploading a letter or bill, hide your name, address and account numbers.
- Use the official app. Check the maker in the app store: X Corp. (App Store) or SpaceX Super Intelligence (Google Play) for Grok, OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), Microsoft (Copilot) or Anthropic (Claude). Avoid look-alike apps that charge up front.
- Know how to delete chats. Each app lets you delete conversations from your history. Look in the menu or settings.
- Use private or temporary chats for sensitive topics. ChatGPT has Temporary Chat, Claude has incognito chats, and Gemini lets you manage or turn off activity in its settings.
- Check the "improve the model" setting. Some tools may use your chats to improve their AI unless you turn it off. In ChatGPT, it's under Settings › Data controls.
- Double-check what matters. AI can be confidently wrong. For health, money and legal questions, confirm with a professional.
What AI is safe and great for
- Writing and rewording emails, letters and messages.
- Explaining confusing things in plain English.
- Planning meals, trips and weekly to-do lists.
- Getting a second opinion on a suspicious message.

Common questions

Can I delete my AI chat history?
Yes. Grok, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Claude all let you delete conversations. Look in the app's menu or settings.
