Find one built-in tool or app that fits how you hear, see, move or think, and set it up today.
Why it matters
Phones and computers now ship with AI tools for captions, describing what the camera sees, voice control and plain-language help. Many people never hear about them. If one of these fits how you work, or helps someone you love, it is worth ten minutes to set up. You decide what is useful.
Do it now
- Captions (deaf and hard of hearing). iPhone 11 or later: Live Captions is built into your phone (Settings, Accessibility, Live Captions). Android: Live Caption is built into Pixel and selected phones (use Wi-Fi the first time to download the language). For in-person talks on Android, Live Transcribe (Android 12 and up) shows speech as text in over 80 languages. Windows 11 (version 22H2 and later) has live captions built into your PC that run on the device.
- Describe what is in front of you (blind and low vision). Be My Eyes is a free app that connects you with sighted volunteers by live video, any time of day. It also has Be My AI, which describes photos for you, with human help on hand for harder requests. Seeing AI from Microsoft is a free app for iPhone and Android that reads text, describes photos and identifies products. On Android, Google's Lookout uses the camera to recognize objects and text (Android 6.0 and up).
- Control your device by voice (mobility). iPhone: Voice Control is built into your phone (Settings, Accessibility, Voice Control). Connect to Wi-Fi for a one-time download, then it works without internet. Android: Voice Access lets you open apps, move around and edit text by speaking (English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese or Japanese).
- Make text easier to follow (cognitive and learning disabilities, or anyone who is tired or busy). Copy the prompt below into any free AI chat with a long letter or set of instructions. It asks for a short summary and one step at a time, the same ideas the W3C recommends for clear content.
- Pick the one tool that fits you or someone you help. Set it up now and try it once on something real, like a video, a label or a letter.
Try this prompt (copy and paste)
Rewrite the text below so it is easier for me to follow. Use short sentences and everyday words. Start with a 2 sentence summary. Then list what I need to do as numbered steps, one action per step. Keep every date, amount and name exactly as written. If something is unclear, say so instead of guessing. Text: """ [paste the letter, email or instructions here] """
You did it
Mark this lesson complete when you have actually tried the prompt (or Instant Ask). Honesty keeps XP meaningful. No shame if you need to come back tomorrow.
